The treatment begins with an assessment of the patient’s medical and health needs. After determining what acupuncture points will be stimulated, the needles will be inserted in a sterile and comfortable environment. At least two needles will be inserted in the acupuncture point and it will remain in the area for another five to twenty minutes. If needed, electrical stimulation, heat or manual manipulation will be applied to maximize the effect of the treatment. For best results, one session per week is recommended although the response of a patient’s body to the treatment varies. The effects are usually assessed after six to eight visits, though this can be extended to 12 visits. Follow-treatments may be done quarterly, but this also depends on the needs of the patients, especially if the symptoms of one’s ailments return.
