  1. I was in Trinoma Activity Center this afternoon, and I found the BPI 0% installment promo to be nonsense. All the items I inquired about have a "discounted cash price." The so-called "discounted cash price" IS the current retail price I see in most stores.

    Ex. Ericsson Xperia Ray

    Cash price = 16,400
    Straight Charge = 18,800
    0% installment = 1,566 x 12 mos = 18,800

By choosing credit over cash, I am automatically charged over 14% more than what the item costs. That's not 0% at all. And of course to avoid further finance charges, I pay the full amount next month. Which means I was really charged 14% for roughly 30 days of credit, by which time the price of the electronics has probably fallen a bit.

When people are told they are buying something at 0% interest, I think it's reasonable for that person to assume that it's 0% interest relative to the retail price of the item, and not relative to the finance charges the bank has decided to add to it.

It's perfectly OK to charge people for deferred payments, but to call it 0% is an utterly false claim. DTI should be doing something about this.

  3. I think charging a higher amount for credit cards straight payment is unlawful. If I remember correctly, I read a news article that DTI said there should be a 1 price policy. Cash and straight credit card payments should be the same. This should be on Consumer Act.

The reasons are quite straightforward. The card user already paid an annual membership for the convenience of using CC. Also, if we fail to pay the amount, we are charged with increduously high interest penalty. Thirdly, CC purchases attracts consumers to buy. A merchant would be able to sell their products faster than if they only accept cash. That equates to better business for merchants. Also, both MC and Visa do not advise merchants to add surcharges to CC payments.

I agree that DTI should definitely look into this event!

  4. BPI has been doing that more than 5 years. I have bought many gadgets at 0%. Meaning, I bought a camera CASH PRICE 12K. divided by 12. I just paid 1K a month. That's 0%, right?! NO HIDDEN CHARGES, NO INTEREST. Maybe, you should clear things with the store. It's not BPI. Its the merchant. But as far as I know, when BPI says 0% its really 0%.

  5. BPI rented the Trinoma Activity Center specifically for this event and invited these merchants over. I assume all payments are made at the BPI booth. If BPI is not complicit in this, then at the very least it is rather sloppy of them not to know this was going on, isn't it? Or are they conveniently just turning a blind eye?

I asked about a TV as well, "discounted cash price" is about Php 4,000 less than card price. The "discounted" cash price is (once again) the retail price I see in other stores. The phone and TV were sold by two different merchants. That's two booths in an event that has only a handful of them.

I'm sure if BPI is reading this they are already instructing their merchants to make the cash and card price the same. Odds are the merchants will not be using the "discounted" cash price, but rather the "0% interest" price, which is really at least 10% higher than the cash price. My advice to all shoppers is to canvas the retail price in other stores first and see if they are indeed being charged 0%.

  6. galit ka ba sa BPI? or baka naman naging biktima ka na din ng "0% interest" tapos ngayon baon ka na sa utang. hindi naman ikaw magbabayad sa utang nila. lahat naman ng credit card company dito may mga "hidden charges" or kung anu-ano pang mga gimik para makakuha ng sales. part yan ng marketing strategy nila. hindi unfair ang ginagawa nila kasi hindi ka naman pinilit na gamitin mo yung credit card. its the buyer's choice to use it or not. so stop ranting about this!

  7. Pakawala ka ba ng BPI? Ano ba sinabi ko? Okay lang mag patong sa pautang, basta nakasaad kung ano ang terms ng pautang at magkano ang patong. Kase ilegal po ang hidden charges sa banking. While it's the buyer's choice to use the card or not, it's the bank's responsibility to be truthful so that their clients can make decisions based on CORRECT information. stop being an apologist for behavior that should be rectified.
